Newcastle in April – Classic

This blog post has been dedicated to classic shots from the Newcastle trip. A few of these pics have a nautical theme.

We started at Gateshead and then walked into the centre of Newcastle. I got most of my classic shots by the millennium bridge and around that area. There were lots of things going on around the river including a market which was really interesting.

On a particular shot, I experimented with selective colour, a feature I’ve come across recently on my new camera. I highlighted a red life raft and this looked quite effective.

Newcastle in April – Typography

This was the first occasion I took out my new Nikon. I was a little nervous taking it out. It’s a lot bigger than my bridge camera, a lot heavier too.

And obviously I was still getting used to how to use it. I picked things up a lot quicker than I first imagined, it just felt like my bridge camera but loads better!

I’ve categorised this blog post, as Typography. With my Graphic Design background, I enjoy working with typography. In the centre of Newcastle, there was quite a lot to choose from!

There is a group of us that visit different places with our cameras. I always enjoy these trips with other photographers as If I go out with my other friends, they tend to get bored quicker.

With my photography friends, we spend a day, finding great spots and most times I get a great selection of shots I’m pleased with.

My New Camera – Nikon D5100 18-55 VR Kit

Wow it seems like a lifetime ago I went shopping for my new camera. It was actually the middle of last month and since then I’ve been using my new camera loads.

I was surprised how quickly I got used to it, it has fairly easy menus and the buttons are all quite easy to find. This is my first SLR camera, and leading up to the purchase I was quite overwhelmed to choose one. There are so many different models and it’s a lot of money to spend.

I bought a Tamron AF70-300mm F/4-5.6 lens which is fantastic! Out of the two lenses, this is my favourite. It gives me so much more versatility than my bridge camera did.

I actually ended up getting a lot of extras, for example I bought a camera bag, lens filters etc. I went to Jessops and the people there were very helpful and helped me pick out the things I wanted.

My advice for anyone who’s thinking of purchasing a SLR is to buy one from an actual shop. So if anything goes wrong, you can pop into the shop and ask for advice.

I am very pleased with my purchases. I think after having my bridge camera for so long, I felt the next natural step was to get an SLR.

I decided to make this review, centred on my first images. I am more confident with the visual than words. Here is a selection of my first shots, hope you like them! You can get an idea of the kind of shots that are possible. I’ve experimented a lot with depth of field, macro etc.

Durham – Pink Haze

I developed a series of pink themed photos. The idea first emerged from a beautiful pink blossom tree we walked past. Two of the children we were with wanted to look at the tree and meanwhile I took some photos.

I enhanced this series of photos using a variety of colour filters in Photoshop. I brought out the pink tones, cropped images etc.

I noticed afterwards from looking at the final images that the children have pink, flowery clothes on. I thought this added an interesting and clever element to the shots and enhanced the ‘pink haze’ concept.

Durham – People & manikins

Portraits seemed to be the photography focal point from the day and I was quite chuffed with some of the shots I produced. Some of the friends I met up with in Durham had kids with them, and they were happy to let me take a few snaps.

While we were walking across the main bridge, in the centre, we saw a musician playing music. I took a few of arty shots of him. I developed an idea of using two people facing different directions. This worked well in monochrome too. It was one of my favourite shots from the day.

I developed a theme on manikins, there were so many in shop windows and also some really interesting ones. I particularly liked the male manikins, they had character and I developed ideas for this through my photography.

Durham – Shoes, windows etc

Last month I visited Durham for a day out. We went as a group, went out for a meal, walked through town and had a look around the cathedral.

This blog is a mix of photos which didn’t really fit into any other categories. A couple of these shots are based on a fantastic shoe shop in the centre of Durham. They had such a selection of wacky, interesting shoes. Many of them were different coloured and patterned doc martins.

Many of us took cameras, I took my Fujji Bridge camera, I think this was the last photo project I did before I bought my new Nikon camera. I will be telling you all about very soon!
