I made best use of the rain on the day and developed my signature theme of reflections. There were lots of puddles which became my key idea. On some of the photos I used puddles to frame all sorts of interesting reflections.
In addition I had taken some self portraits also using puddles. On the day I was wearing some hippy Ugg boots which became a part of my self portrait image idea.
As part of the image I stood by a path. I peered into a puddle by the road and my outline became present. The light wasn't bright enough to make out my features but a silhouette was created.
Many of my type work from this photo session were themed around street signs. Because of the weather on the day, some interesting ideas developed.
For example the ‘Look right’ and ‘Look Left’ ideas worked well with somebody walking into the picture. Because of the rain, the mood seemed quite solemn. The light was poor but reflections in small puddles of water added interest.
From this series I most enjoyed developing the idea of the trodden path. The wet foot prints were noticeable and the subtle reflections on the ground made some interesting monochrome images.
I find it interesting to develop images from things that can be found on Saltburn Beach. I found some green rope which I decided to photograph; the bright colour worked well with surrounding neutral objects.
There were also some interesting and unusual rocks. One particular rock seemed to have eroded and had lots of different sized holes. As I began photographing the rocks it seemed this particular rock worked well against other kind rocks for example smoother and brightly coloured varieties.
This was my first visit to the Arts Bank gallery cafe. I enjoyed a lovely hot chocolate with mini marshmallows. I was with a friend who ordered a tea in a lovely vintage cup.
We discussed new photo ideas and had a general catch up while watching the rain outside. I was sat by the window and I found it interesting to watch the goings on of local people in the centre of Saltburn. The cafe was pleasant and will most probably revisit.
The knitted characters around the seafront and other well known local spots around the area have become a popular thing to photograph. They portray a great sense of community and have proven a good way to advertise local art and creative people.
The knitted characters add something extra to very iconic scenes. While in Saltburn on this particular day my friend and I spotted some more knitted characters by Profile gallery.
They reminded me slightly of Christmas baubles and the bright colours contrasted with the dark and dismal day. I found this interesting and I developed some unusual compositions for example a lamppost and using the church as a backdrop.
On the 2nd day of January a friend and I visited Saltburn. It was very poor weather; it was on and off pouring down with rain the whole day. A range of new photograph concepts were produced simply by a change of weather.
I took many classic Saltburn images but the most iconic image from this series included a landscape shot with a metal railing in the foreground.
There were raindrops on the railing which added detail to otherwise a very dreamy and soft focused image. I liked the way a story of the day out had been portrayed through the weather.
